The association organises hui, AGM’s and social get togethers often at the Stockyards Reserve at the head of Te Matuku Bay in the summer, or at the Waiheke Gin Distillery on Cowes Bay Road and sometimes in private homes. The Association doesn’t yet have a community facility anywhere in the area.
A major activity of the Association centres around the development and implementation of a Emergency and Disaster Plan. It has also worked with Local Board and other community groups around Emergency Planning for Waiheke. With funding from the Waiheke Local Board it has purchased a container to serve as a central community emergency facility, which has been placed on private land (provided by Cyril Wright) near Orapiu. WEeCA has drafted an emergency plan and is holding a community hui in November to prepare a list of supplies and equipment to be placed in the container as a community resource. and will be seeking funding.
As part of the local preparedness for fire in the area WEeCA is working with Fire and Emergency NZ (FENZ) to establish water reserves and a team of community volunteers to support the fire brigade and provide some 1st responder fire-fighting capability. With generous support from FENZ two 30,000L water tanks and pump have been installed on private land (thanks to Dave and Theresa Harold) which is easily accessed from Orapiu Rd. FENZ is also recruiting volunteers from Eastern End and providing training for variety of support roles
Stimulated by Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023, WeECA drafted an Emergency Plan for Eastern End, that included 5 small hubs centred around residents able to offer refuge in case of emergency evacuations as well as a main emergency evacuation centre near Orapiu (on Cyril Wrights property); emergency radio contact and reporting schedules with the Local Board through Waiheke Radio, emergency supplies of water and blankets in case of evacuation.
With the regularity of power cuts over the last few years, Eastern Enders have been particularly concerned about power security. WEeCA has advocated on behalf of the Eastern End community for improvements in maintenance of the local power grid. It has developed a good relationship with Vector and supported Vector as a community liaison to in implement an extensive replacement and maintenance programme for the Eastern End earlier this year.
WEeCA is supporting Otakawhe Bay residents under leadership of Jason Bryant and Fiona Gorinas to restore the Otakawhe wetland that empties into the Te Matuku Marine Reserve.
Waiheke may soon see the introduction of kiwi, translocated from Ponui Island. WEeCA has facilitated meetings between the Save the Kiwi Trust and local residents as part of consultation on the proposal to introduce kiwi.
