WAIHEKE EASTERN END COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION INCORPORATED
The Waiheke Eastern End Community Association Incorporated (WEeCA) has been established as a community-driven, collaborative group to:
· support the rural Waiheke Island Eastern End community;
· support the community’s resilience, planning and response to emergencies and natural disasters;
· provide a community social network and communication channel with the Waiheke Local Board;
· support and facilitate the preservation of the environment and natural amenities in the area;
The idea of a community association arose from a meeting of the Waiheke Local Board with the Eastern End Community in 2021 and WEeCA was incorporated in October 2022.
Membership is for all in the community (see definition of the area covered) and there are no costs to being a member. It is a community-driven network that exists for all the community and is there to meet everyone’s diverse interests and needs, and thus it operates in a collaborative, consultative way in accordance with its tikanga and values. It is overseen by a small committee of nominated community members, and there are regular community gatherings to enable input from everyone to identify its activities.
Values and Tikanga: The Society supports and represents the communities of the Eastern End through collaboration and respect for different views and acknowledgement of tangata whenua.
The following values are at its core:
• Manaakitanga, encouraging and welcoming members of the community to participate whilst respecting different views and interests.
• Kotahitanga and whanaungatanga, providing a sense of togetherness and connection; working together and learning and sharing experiences. Recognising each brings their own but valued perspective. Providing support in difficult times.
• Kaitiakitanga: respecting and conserving the terrestrial and marine environments; recognising and acknowledging the local heritage and tangata whenua in the society’s activities and encouraging public enjoyment of the natural amenities including dark sky.
